Hummingbirds: 1/2000s minimum for hovering shots — 1/3200s preferred. f/5.6 wide open for isolation. ISO will climb in shade (1600–3200), accept it. For perched shots 1/500s is fine. Use continuous AF with bird eye-tracking if your body supports it.
Flamingos at Jan Thiel: You can get away with 1/800s for standing/wading. The 600mm across the salt pan fills the frame beautifully at 50–100m. Heat shimmer is real after 9am — go early. A monopod saves your arms.
Light: 6:30–8:30am is the window. The Ruby-topaz gorget only ignites with front-lighting or cross-lighting — position yourself with the sun behind you or at 45°. Backlit hummingbirds = black silhouettes.
What to bring: Monopod (tripod optional). Extra battery. Water. Hat. The 600mm f/5.6 is all you need — don't bother packing a second lens for birding walks. Reef-safe sunscreen on hands will smear on the lens barrel — apply before handling gear and let it absorb.
Only 1h 7m layover in Atlanta. With Sky Priority and First Class bag claim it's doable — but go straight from the jetway to Gate B06, International Terminal. Do not stop. TSA Pre✓ both legs.
Look for the Amstar rep or Dreams Curaçao desk at arrivals, after customs. Confirm your return pickup time and booking reference at the Dreams concierge on Day 1. Airport is ~30 min from the resort.
You land 1:29pm, check-in is 3pm. Room may not be ready immediately. Drop bags at bell services, walk to Il Mare beach, come back to your room when ready. Don't wait in the lobby.
Il Mare is adults-only and ~2 min walk from Dreams. Most Dreams guests don't know to go there. The beach is quieter, the food is better, the pool is more refined. Make it your daily base.
Punda (Willemstad) has fireworks every Thursday at 8:15pm. Willemstad day trip is on Thursday Mar 26, timed so you're at Fort Nassau for dinner when the fireworks go off below.
Curaçao has some of the best reef snorkeling in the Caribbean. Bring reef-safe sunscreen — some beaches require it. Water shoes helpful at Tugboat and Directors Bay. Water temp ~27°C year-round.
The resort area is drivable but some activities need transport. Taxis are reliable. Rideshare apps don't operate widely — pre-arrange with the concierge or use resort taxis for Willemstad and west coast beaches.
Curaçao uses the Netherlands Antillean Guilder (ANG), but USD is widely accepted everywhere. Credit cards fine at restaurants and shops. Most activity operators take cards.
Sharon teaches 30-minute classes at 10am and 5pm, Monday–Saturday (not Sunday). Morning: Seth heads to Il Mare at 10am, Sharon joins at 10:30am. Evening: Seth starts cocktails at Blu at 5pm, Sharon joins at 5:30pm. Thursday Mar 26 (Willemstad + fireworks): leave at 10:30am after class, back by 4:15pm for 5pm class, then drive to Fort Nassau. Friday Mar 27 (wine tasting): Seth starts at 5pm, Sharon joins at 5:30 — no conflict. Final class is Saturday Mar 28.
Both guests are vegetarian. Tell every restaurant host when you sit down — don't wait to be asked. All-inclusive gourmet kitchens often have off-menu vegetarian options for guests who ask. Zoëtry and Battellino (Mediterranean) are naturally the strongest fits. Portofino (Italian) is reliable. At Marché, walk the stalls and ask "no meat?" before ordering.
